Volta Academia is an international organization dedicated to recognizing and elevating exemplary research talent across the world's most consequential fields — from artificial intelligence to literary scholarship. Open to Masters and PhD holders with published research.
Volta Academia is an international organization and annual fair with a single mandate: to identify and celebrate exemplary research talent wherever it exists in the world.
Since 2016, we have brought together postgraduate scholars from more than 60 countries for four days of rigorous discussion, cross-disciplinary exchange, and public presentation of research.
Volta Academia is resolutely cross-disciplinary. We believe the most transformative ideas emerge at the intersection of fields — and our international fair is designed to make those intersections happen.
Each Volta speaker is a published researcher selected for the depth of their contribution and their ability to communicate ideas across disciplines.
A Victorian civic landmark at the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town — five dedicated programme spaces, a research exhibition hall, and evening reception rooms.
The Grand Assembly Hall provides the setting for Volta Academia's international annual fair. Fully accessible, with simultaneous interpretation at all main-stage events.

Volta Academia is a global organization dedicated to recognizing and elevating exemplary research talent — across every discipline, every continent, and every institution. We exist to make brilliant work visible to the world it deserves to reach.
Volta Academia was founded in Edinburgh in 2016 by a group of researchers who believed exceptional scholarly work was too often invisible beyond the narrow communities that produced it. We created an international platform where the finest postgraduate minds could present their research to a global audience.
Volta Academia is headquartered in Edinburgh and operates as an international non-profit organization, governed by an academic board drawn from partner universities across Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Membership is open exclusively to holders of Master's degrees and doctoral qualifications who have published peer-reviewed or formally recognized research.
Volta has welcomed scholars from Oxford, MIT, the Sorbonne, University of Tokyo, University of Cape Town, King Abdulaziz University, the Indian Institutes of Technology, and hundreds more institutions worldwide.
Every Volta member has demonstrated academic achievement through a postgraduate qualification and published contribution. We hold the bar high because the work demands it.
Brilliant research exists everywhere. Volta actively recruits scholars from underrepresented regions and ensures our international programme reflects the global distribution of excellent work.
The hardest problems do not respect departmental boundaries. We deliberately build a programme that puts AI researchers in conversation with legal scholars, economists with public health scientists.
Volta Academia 2025 welcomes researchers from more than 60 nations — making it one of the most internationally diverse academic gatherings in the world.
+ 48 further nations including Canada, Australia, Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia, Mexico, Turkey, UAE, and more.
A one-day symposium gathers 34 postgraduate scholars from 8 countries. The founding principle: only published researchers, only rigorous work.
Volta moves to the Grand Assembly Hall. Scholars from 22 nations attend. Research fields expand to include computer science and law.
A dedicated strand for artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer science research is introduced.
Volta Academia's largest edition. Eight disciplines, four days, one international standard of excellence.
Volta Academia is intentionally cross-disciplinary. We believe the most transformative research happens at the edges of established fields — and our international fair creates the conditions for those collisions to occur.
AI is the defining research challenge of our era. Volta Academia hosts one of the few international forums where AI researchers engage directly with legal scholars, ethicists, economists, and public health scientists. We welcome work from machine learning theory to applied AI systems to AI governance.
From the foundations of computation to global-scale distributed systems, computer science underpins every domain at Volta. We welcome theoretical and applied work with particular interest in research engaging with social and institutional implications.
Clinical and laboratory research sits at Volta alongside social science, law, and computer science. We particularly welcome work bridging computational approaches with biomedical questions and research addressing healthcare equity at a global scale.
As technology reshapes the conditions of human life, legal scholarship has never been more consequential. Volta brings international lawyers into conversation with technologists, economists, and social scientists. We welcome comparative, international, and theoretical legal scholarship.
Volta's economics strand spans macroeconomic theory, development economics, and the rapidly evolving intersection of finance and technology. We are especially interested in research addressing global inequality, sustainable economics, and governance of financial systems in emerging markets.
Social sciences provide the human context without which no technical research is complete. Volta's international cohort spans political science, sociology, anthropology, and migration studies — contributing perspectives from every region of the world.
The humanities are not separate from the sciences at Volta — they are essential to them. Literary scholarship, philosophy, and cultural studies provide the interpretive frameworks that make sense of a world shaped by computation, migration, and political upheaval.
Historical scholarship at Volta is global in scope. We are particularly interested in research that challenges Eurocentric narratives, employs digital methods to illuminate the past, and engages with the ethical responsibilities of the historian.
Volta Academia continuously expands its disciplinary scope. Inter-disciplinary applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
